Day 5 & 6 Getting to Lake Superior Provincial Park - through Sault Ste Marie

Left Grundy without incident, on our way to Sault Ste Marie for the night. We hadn't travelled the road from Sudbury to The Sault since 2011, when the scarcity of service had us chugging into Whitefish at the only gas stop! Today we saw a huge difference! The whole route was so much more developed. Getting enough gas to arrive safely in Sault is no longer a problem!

We are in a KOA for the night. It is to camping, what McDonalds is to dinner out. You know what you're going to get. It's simple and straightforward. It’s always in a location convenient to your route.  It does the job! We had an overnight and we were away again by mid-morning!

The drive from Sault Ste Marie to Lake Superior Provincial Park is delightfully Canadian! The first glimpse of Gitche Gumee always generates a gasp. Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world, and it is evident! Finding yourself driving along the shore with apparent endless forest surrounding you on all other sides, necessitated a celebration of Canada! I brought up a Best Canadian Hits for a Road Trip list on Spotify. From Bryan Adams first note, David cranked up the volume and we drove, singing along like we haven’t since we were in our 20s! Talk about it being the journey, and not just the destination!

The trip today only took about 90 minutes, so by lunchtime we were set up and ready for four glorious days in our little spot on the shore! Sublime! After lunch and a quick minute to set up our CLAM we were good to go! The CLAM may indeed save our lives here since the black flies and mosquitos are in ceaseless competition to see who can draw blood first. Our first walk along the shoreline wasn’t so bad. At the water’s edge we were safe from the ravenous creatures. They stayed back at the tree line awaiting our return and planning their attack! Like I said, that screen shelter will be our salvation!

A walk after dinner allowed us to set up our plan for tomorrow. We decided on a coffee spot at the lake to start the day and have the first two hikes scoped out! There are twelve hikes here at Lake Superior. When David mentioned to Mary-Kate on her Father’s Day call that we only had four days here so we wouldn’t make all the hikes, Mary-Kate did say her money was on Mom and getting most of them checked out – challenge accepted!

The day from Dryden to Thunder Bay was delightfully uneventful. We stayed here on the way down so knew exactly where we were going and what to expect. It may not sound like a marvelous adventure, but it’s a great travel day! The smoke was greatly reduced and the rain stopped so we were all good! Just a pretty little stroll before bed!

Day 14 Thunder Bay

Moving on today for an overnight in Thunder Bay in a full service park. We certainly don't mind simple living, but every once in a while having full service to do laundry, clean tanks, restock the larder and have a proper shower makes roughing it that much more manageable! The other thing that we finally have for at least one night is reliable Wi-Fi and cell service. Once again, loads to be celebrated in disconnecting. When you do have intermittent Wi-Fi and get a notice from your bank about an issue, you need cell signal for the dual-factor authentication! We have had a couple of issues that were delayed until we had cell coverage, so today was also the day to get those chores sorted. Jonathan and Jenna had given us National Park Passes for Mother's/Father's Day but our generous PM and his free park visits for 2025 wrecked that plan. They had a friend recommend a Mexican restaurant in Thunder Bay, so insisted on taking us to supper as a substitute. We insisted it wasn'...

Day 43 Winnipeg (again)

Settled into Winnipeg once again after a long day of travel. This morning when we were getting ready to leave Moose Jaw, I realized it was time to go home. To be fair this happens at the end of many wonderful holidays. I am having such a wonderful time I don’t want it to end, but when it’s time to go home, it’s time to be home! Camping is not for everyone, but I love it. I love the simplicity. I love the problem solving. I love the adventure. I even love how you need to work for everything you have, and what you want becomes less. This morning as we had breakfast and prepared to move on, I found myself thinking – this will all be much easier to do when I get home! I was feeling grumbly! A sure sign it’s time to be home! Our travel was much better today. There was still significant smoke for our entire drive, but no rain. I can’t bring myself to complain about the smoke realizing that people here have been living with this all summer, and yet even those people are so much better off...
