Day 39 Waterton Lakes National Park
Today was our last full day here in these beautiful mountains. The weather was not great, but we also didn’t want to miss a last chance to explore, so we made the best of our day. Despite clouds that suggested more prudent action, we decided to hike to Blackiston Falls. It was down by Red Rock Canyon that we had hiked a few days ago so we knew even if it rained the drive in was beautiful enough to make the trip worthwhile. It was a bit of a climb, but as Jonathan pointed out, “If you're hiking Blackiston Falls, the water has to fall from somewhere!” No rain appeared though the clouds held promise! The upward climb more than compensated for the coolish morning – thank goodness for layers!
We had gone to the Visitors Centre for trail maps and park information on our first day here. We had seen there were educational displays but hadn’t had a chance to get back to check them out. Today was the perfect day as the temperatures continued to drop and the skies became more ominous.
This was my favourite display. There are two web-cams in the park that take pictures of the same two peaks 365 days a year. The pictures run in a continuous slideshow in these two screens. We have been struck by just how different the same mountain looks depending on the weather, time of day, light, angle...this display really emphasized what we have been noticing. After supper when Jenna said she wanted to go back to the
mountains one last time, no one objected. We can see the mountains from our trailers,
but we have discovered better, closer spots with more spectacular views of some
of our favourite peeks! Our trip out wasn’t long when it became very clear the
promises of rain were about to be fulfilled! From the comfort of the truck we
were able to watch the storms move in over the mountains and quite a
spectacular view for our ride home.
Bands of rain headed our way. We made it home first!
